OCTOBER 2010 --
BMW is recalling
certain model year 2008 X5 SAVs vehicles
with 6-cylinder engines manufactured from
November 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008.
Due to a manufacturing process fault, the
fuel pump was not produced to
specifications. Under specific vehicle
operating conditions, the fuel pump's
commutator could experience an increase in
wear. This wear could lead to fuel pump
malfunction and engine stalling. Engine
stalling could create a potential for a
crash resulting in injury or death. The
manufacturer has not yet provided a remedy
or an owner notification schedule for this
campaign. 10V-518

NEWS:
BMW recalls 150,000
cars with potential fuel pump failure
YAHOO NEWS --
October 27,
2010 – BMW of
North America
announced a
recall Tuesday
of more than
150,000 vehicles
because of
potential
problems with
their fuel
pumps.
BMW said the
problem is
specific to
vehicles with
twin-turbo
inline
six-cylinder
engines with the
High Pressure
Injection direct
fuel injection
system. The
high-pressure
fuel pumps for
these vehicles
run the risk of
failure, BMW
said.
BMW said a
recall of
130,000 vehicles
extends to 335i
models from 2007
to 2010, as well
as the following
models from 2008
to 2010: 135i,
535i and X6
xDrive35i Sports
Activity Coupes.
The recall also
applies to Z4
Roadster
sDrive35i models
from 2009 to
2010.
About 40,000 of
the 130,000
vehicles are
expected to need
a new high
pressure fuel
pump, the
company said.
The company said
that "symptoms
include
long-crank
engine starting
times along with
the illumination
of the 'service
engine soon'
light. In
certain cases,
the driver may
experience
reduced engine
performance in a
safe mode
accompanied by a
tone and
illumination of
the 'engine
malfunction'
light."
BMW also
announced a
separate recall
of about 20,800
MY 2008 X5
Sports Activity
Vehicles. These
vehicles will
also need a new
low-pressure
fuel pump, the
company said.
"In this case,
should the fuel
pump experience
a failure, the
engine will stop
running and the
driver will lose
power assist for
the steering and
brakes, although
both the
steering and
brakes remain
operational,"
the company
said.

JUNE 2010 --
BMW is recalling certain model year 2011 X5 SAV and X6 SAV passenger vehicles
manufactured from April 1 through May 8, 2010. The tire label does not conform
to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire
Selection and Rims." The vehicles are equipped with 20-inchwheels, but the label
states that the vehicles were equipped with 19-inch wheels and the stated
tirepressure is incorrect for the equipped wheels. Improper tire inflation can
result in premature tire failure or reduced vehicle handling performance, either
of which can increase the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners and provide
correct labels free of charge. The owner will have the option to affix the label
themselves or they may take their vehicle to a BMW dealer who will affix the
label for them at no cost. The manufacturer has not yet provided the agency with
a notification schedule. 10V-233
APRIL 2010 -- BMW is recalling certain model
year 2010 X5 M SAV vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and
Associated Equipment," These vehicle's were equipped with side marker lamps, but
not the power supply cables leading to the lamps. As a result, the side marker
lamps do not illuminate. These vehicles do notcomply with requirements of FMVSS
No. 108. BMW has not yet provided a remedy or an owner notification schedule for
this campaign. . 10V-152
JULY 2009 --
BMW is
recalling MY 2009 X5 and X6
vehicles. The rear brake
discs may not have been
manufactured according to
specifications. As a result,
a reduction in braking
performance at the affected
rear wheel could occur. In
an extreme case, the
affected rear brake disc
could break resulting in a
loss of braking at that
wheel increasing stopping
distances and the risk of a
crash. BMW will notify
owners and will repair the
vehicles by inspecting the
rear brake discs and, if
necessary, replace them free
of charge. The safety recall
is expected to begin during
August 2009. 09V-255

NEWS:
BMW Recalls 200,000 Vehicles for Airbag
Failures
Extends
airbag warranty for some models
ConsumerAffairs.com -- August 13, 2008 --
BMW is recalling 200,000 cars and small SUVs
because the front passenger-side airbag
could fail.
The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) warned that in some
of the recalled BMWs it is possible that
"the front passenger airbags will not deploy
even if a sufficiently severe accident would
occur."
The recalled BMWs include the 2004 to
2005 5-Series standard and sport seat
models, the 2004 to 2006 X3 and the 2006
3-Series with sport seats.
NHTSA reported on its Web site that the
passenger-side airbags can deactivate
because of wear associated with a passenger
getting in and out of the vehicle.
"Depending on the manner and frequency of
the front passenger's entry and exit, small
cracks have developed in the (sensor) mat.
If this occurs, the front passenger airbags,
with the exception of the head protection
system, will be deactivated," the agency
warned.
BMW dealers will repair the sensor system in
the passenger seat when the recall begins in
late September. BMW will extend the warranty
for airbags on the recalled vehicles "to 10
years from the first registration without
any mileage limit," according to NHTSA.
The warranty extension covers the 2006
6-Series, 3-Series with a standard seat,
2004 to 2005 Z4, 2004 to 2006 7-Series, 2006
X5 and 2004 to 2006 5-Series with a comfort
seat.
"Under the extended warranty program, the
occupant detection mat in a vehicle that
experiences this specific issue will be
replaced at not charge to the customer,"
NHTSA advises on its Web site.
NHTSA began investigating airbags failures
in the BMW earlier this year when the Office
of Defect Investigation reported that "the
passenger frontal airbag may malfunction and
render the passenger airbag inoperative."
The models included in the initial
investigation were the 2004 to 2006 BMW 5
and 7 series sedans, Z4 convertibles and X3
SUVs, as well as 2006 BMW 3 and 6 series
cars and X5 SUVs.
NHTSA reported "729 non-duplicating owner
reports and 23,739 non-duplicating warranty
claims" prompted the investigation or
engineering analysis.
BMW owners can contact the automaker at
1-800-525-7417 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236
(TTY 1-800-424-9153).

MAY 2008 -- BMW is
recalling 55 MY 2008 X5 sports utility
vehicles for problems with the rear axle
stabilizer (anti-sway bar). These vehicles
were equipped with a sports-suspension
stabilizer rather than a standard suspension
stabilizer on the rear axle. In certain
driving conditions, such as fast lane
changes at high speed, the vehicle could
experience an 'over-steer' behavior
affecting vehicle handling and control,
which could increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the rear axle
stabilizer. The recall is expected to begin
during May 2008. Owners may contact BMW at
1-800-831-1117 or via e-mail to
CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com. 08V-170
AUGUST 2007 -- BMW is recalling 6,595 MY 2007 X5
passenger vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements
of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 135, "Passenger Car
Brake Systems." The cap of the brake fluid reservoir has been
designed in order to recognize a low fluid level of the
hydraulic brake system by triggering a red warning lamp in the
instrument cluster. A switch that is attached to this cap could
malfunction at high temperatures. If this happened, the red
warning lamp in the instrument cluster would not be activated.
Failure of the hydraulic brake system may cause increased
stopping distances which could result in a crash. Dealers will
replace the cap of the brake fluid reservoir. The manufacturer
has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. 07V391
OCTOBER 2007 -- BMW is
recalling 29,250 MY 2006-2007 550I, 650I
coupe and convertible and MY 2007 X5 4.8I
passenger vehicles equipped with V8 engines.
In conditions of below freezing temperatures
combined with low humidity, it is possible
for electrostatic discharge to occur at the
fuel rails. If this were to occur, the
engine electronic control unit (ECU) could
be affected resulting in engine stalling. If
stalling were to occur, the driver may not
be able to maintain vehicle speed or
accelerate and the power steering could fail
increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will
attach two ground cables in the engine
compartment. The recall is expected to begin
during November 2007. 07V-479
